Who We Are

IMG_0016.jpgWe are five people who have all had recent experience with homelessness and and rooming houses. The idea of One Step Off The Street began about five years ago at 5 Layfield Street South Melbourne (pictured left). A few of us saw the need for more accurate information. Although there were heaps of brochures available often the services advertised did not happen. The struggle to complete that project is another story.

What we did discover was the need for rooming house residents and homeless people to have a voice that will be heard in the wider community. Hopefully, we will be will be doing just that. Feedback from the printed version of One Step’ indicated the need to demonstrate some hope for the future. Unfortunately this is a hard one. Until rooming house residents and homeless people get their own voice and are able to address some of the problems associated with obtaining appropriate assistance to fight legal issues we cannot offer much hope. What we can do is raise the issues.

What we did learn was that we needed was a way to have our voice heard in the community. One Step Off The Street hopes to achieve this.
