OUR SURVEYparktg.jpg

Aim
To examine weekly price price changes in generic or no name brand products at supermarkets and to collect local residents knowledge about food security issues.

Method
Over a two week period Project Workers checked prices on 20 selected items at six locations, Safeway Balaclava, Safeway St Kilda, Coles Balaclava, Coles St Kilda, IGA St Kilda and Aldi St Kilda.

Project workers used existing networks and visited agencies, rooming houses and others sites where low income earners can be found and collected stories and snippets of information.

Statistical Findings
Seven items items out of 120 items changed their price.

Price changes were found on 7 or 5.8% of the items checked. The price on 3 items went up 5%. The price on 1 item went up 10%. The price on 1 item rose by 13%. The price on 3 items went down by 5%.

Summery of Residents Comments
This year seems to be the year where low income earners are saying their incomes, “Just don’t go as far as it used to. Many of the cheaper items on supermarket shelves are disappearing and are being replaced by higher priced 2 for the price of 1 deals. The quality of many food items for sale is falling. Complaints of price variations between supermarket shelves and the checkout point were common. People said they were tired of complaining and frustrated about the frequency of mistakes at one supermarket.

FOOD RECIPES

Pasta Bolognese
Pasta is cheap and easy to prepare. Cooked with the right ingredients pasta dishes can be both nutritious and tasty. You can be creative and add you own ingredients.

Ingredientsfood1.jpg

Pasta 250 grams 1/2 a standard packet of spaghetti, penne, rigatoni, spirals
Meat 500 grams lean minced meat or tinned meat such as braised steak
Tomatoes 1 tin you can also use tomato pasta sauce and a couple of fresh tomatoes
Oil 2 tablespoons you can use any cooking oil but extra virgin olive oil is the best
Onions 2 medium size you can vary this amount
Garlic 2 cloves some people do not like garlic but it is really good for you
Cheese 125 grams parmesan or tasty cheese
Extras to taste fresh capsicum, chillies, ginger, celery, carrot, peas
Topping a handful chopped parsley or basil

Method

Bolognese Sauce
Dice the onions and garlic. Heat the cooking oil in a saucepan over a medium heat. Add the onion and garlic, stirring for a few minutes or until soft. Add any extras such as diced capsicum and stir through. Extra virgin olive oil helps release the healthy properties of the ingredients.

Add the mince or canned meat and stir. Cook on a gentle heat until browned.

Add the peeled tomatoes or the pasta sauce and heat through. Let the sauce rest until the pasta is almost ready.

Pasta
Bring 1.5 litres of water to the boil. Add 250 grams or half a packet of pasta. Stir occasionally, especially at the start to stop the pasta sticking to the bottom of the sauce pan. Let boil for 10 minutes. Keep the sauce warming an grate the cheese if you need to. Test one piece of pasta by removing from the pan and once cool check if it is cooked.

Cooking Tips Getting Goodness
When you are cooking you need to make sure you are enjoying the maximum health benefits from your ingredients. Onions and garlic assist in reducing cholesterol. Capsican and tomatoes are rich in antioxidants and may assist in preventing a number of medical issues.

1 Heat pan add add extra virgin olive oil. For some reason extra virgin oil assists the nutrition blending process the best.

2 Add garlic and onion to the pan and stir. Add tomatoes and capsicum.
Keep stirring with the heat still on until the onions start to go mushy.

3 Reduce heat and slowly add the meat and any other ingredients.

4 Cook slowly as this allows the nutritional goodness to remain.

Enjoy!
