Homelessness Week at South Melbourne Market

We will be hosting a pop-up stall at South Melbourne market and we are inviting everyone in the community to come along and get creative!

Make and decorate an Origami house to show your support for more safe and affordable housing in Victoria. All houses will be displayed throughout our offices and will join the broader campaign to create 60,000 Origami houses – one for each home we need to end homelessness in our state. There will also be a support worker onsite to chat with anyone about housing, referrals and support.

We are back in Port Melbourne!

After three years, we are finally back in our office in the Port Melbourne Town Hall. We will be offering Information, Referral and Support on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and Financial Counselling on Tuesdays. You will find us down the corridor of the town hall, across from the library side entrance.

So, if you live in Albert Park, Middle Park, South Melbourne, Port Melbourne or Garden City we are your local PPCG office! We are an appointment-only service (we don’t have reception to respond to walk-ins), so please make sure you call us before visiting. We look forward to seeing you.

Port Phillip Community Group (PPCG) began life as the St Kilda Community Group in the early 1970s with the aim to ‘improve communication between, and co-ordination of, existing welfare services, conducting research and service planning and establishing a multi-service community centre where residents could go for assistance’.

End Child Poverty

This Antipoverty Week PPCG is joining people across the country to call for the end of child poverty. It’s not OK that 1 in 6 children in our communities are living in poverty. All children deserve an equal opportunity to play, learn, and thrive, but the reality is that kids living with financial hardship miss out on important opportunities like school camps and sports teams, and have to deal with significant challenges such as food insecurity, housing insecurity and lack of access to adequate clothing, technology and other essentials.

Poverty not a choice made by families, its is a result of structural and policy failures such as chronically low income support and the lack of affordable housing. Melbourne is the 5th most unaffordable housing market in the world, yet rent assistance hasn’t increased beyond inflation rates since 2000.

We can and should be doing more. Let’s call for change together!

New Chatty Cafe at ARCH!

We are so excited to introduce our new Chatty Cafe at Alma Road Community House. Connect with your community in this bright and welcoming neighbourhood house and enjoy a hot cuppa, some snacks and a laugh together. ARCH has a playground, gorgeous gardens, little library and plenty of sunny spots to relax. Come on your own, or bring a friend. This is a free activity and everyone is welcome!

Port Phillip Community Group can now assist Victorian households to apply for the $250 Power Saving Bonus. Our support workers are trained in energy hardship and affordability and can assist you to:

ensure you are not paying too much for utilities,
avoid bill shock,
assist if you are in financial hardship,
submit the application for your $250 PSB.

If you already submitted your PSB for this round (since July 1st, 2022), please contact us in March and we can assist you with your application for the new round.

PPCG is seeking a highly motivated and passionate Information Referral & Support (IRS) Coordinator based at our St Kilda site.

The IRS Coordinator is responsible for providing coordination and leadership to a team of Information Referral and Support staff, administration staff and volunteers, connecting with the local community, and building networks and pathways for PPCG clients/service users.

The role is comprised of 0.4 FTE IRS Coordination and 0.4/0.5 FTE IRS Service Delivery.

This position will suit someone with demonstrated leadership skills, ability to work with local service systems, and with a commitment to working in partnership with individuals, families and communities to empower them to achieve their goals.

The IRS Team are responsible for the provision of:

Emergency relief and material aid, crisis and general support to eligible clients through equitable and confidential assessment of their needs.
Information, support, referral, and advocacy for clients and/or to empower clients to address their issues by providing them with the necessary resources to do so.
